What is a virus?
A computer virus is a program that is designed to do one or many things.
A virus can destroy files, damage legitimate programs, slow your computer
or even format your hard drive. Viruses are very much like biological viruses.
They are able to replicate and spread quickly by email so that joke email may
not be as funny as you think. They can also attach themselves or embed
themselves into everyday files. Once the virus is installed within your computer,
it can be hard to remove and can even prevent Anti-virus software being downloaded, so it is better to prevent an infection rather than remove it
afterwards. Always ensure you install anti-virus software and update it regularly.

What is spyware?
Sometimes known as Adware, spyware is a piece of software that installs
itself on your computer without your knowledge. It tracks your internet usage
and the sites that you visit. This information is then sent to a specific computer
and used for advertising statistics, campaigns or malicious wrong doings.
Spyware can record not only your internet favourite sites but also keystrokes, passwords and bank card information. Whilst some are only interested in your surfing habits for their research for advertisements, some are incredibly
aggressive and extremely difficult to remove.

Spyware is usually inadvertently installed on your computer when you download
files, open infected emails or click on pop up windows whilst surfing the internet.
A Client's computer was running extremely slowly and after a scanning their
system we found the computer had over a thousand spyware programs running
on it! It is our record to date - don't be the one to beat it!

What is a Trojan?
Like a trojan horse, this program usually enters your computer system hiding
within a legitimate program or file. A trojan is designed to cause malicious
problems with your computer and even delete files. Again they can be very
difficult to remove and can embed themselves deep within the system registry
(the backbone of the operating system).
Trojans can't replicate themselves like a virus so rely on the program or file they
sit within being shared and copied to your friends, family and colleagues.

What is malware?
Malware is a generic name for malicious software. Malware includes the
viruses and trojans.

What is a worm?
A worm is a virus that is able to replicate itself without the need of a human help.
Worms cause computer systems and networks to work overtime and clog up the
memory and bandwidth which in turn slows the computer to a grinding halt. The
program is able to spread from computer to computer infecting each computer
in turn. They usually rely on loopholes in operating systems so it is vital to regularly

update your system with the latest Microsoft security patches.

How do I know if my computer has a virus?
Whilst some viruses make themselves known by making your computer
completely unusable, some are a lot more subtle so it can be difficult to identify
their presence. If your computer has suddenly started to run slowly, crashes doing
something normal or behaves in an unpredictable manner then you may have a
virus. The best way to be sure is to perform a scan of your computer with an up to
date Anti-virus program.

How can I protect my computer against viruses?
There are many forms of Anti-virus software from expensive all-singing and all-
dancing through to free programs. Please note that just because they are free,
it doesn't mean they are not capable. Some Anti-virus makers charge companies

for their software but allow home users to download and use the same product
free of charge.

There are lots of different pieces of software out there so if you need help

choosing, please contact us.

Whatever software you choose, ensure it is updated regularly to provide
complete protection of your computer.

It is important to realise that you are under no obligation to purchase (after the

free trial period expires) the Anti-virus software that comes automatically with a
new PC.

What is a firewall and do I need one?
A firewall can be either a physical device or a piece of software that acts as a
barrier between your computer and the internet. It controls precisely what
information can either enter or leave your PC or home network. A firewall will
prevent people being able to access your computer across the internet.
